What AI believes about Workday.
When different kinds of buyers ask an AI which HR system a growing company should choose, the answer comes back with a shortlist of names and a recommendation based on what the models understand about the brands. That is measurable. And it is changeable. We looked at how four models understand Workday, what they say, and why.
Workday is not an Upmode client. This is a measurement example of how AI understands the brand, produced with Upmode's platform from public materials only.
Named in four answers out of five. Chosen in one.
A query battery and scoring system designed against personas measured ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.
HR and finance platforms are complex products with multiple stakeholders. Awareness of Workday is not the issue. Conversion from the shortlist to primary recommendation has room to grow.
Where Workday is the primary recommendation
Mentioned at all, same order
Models can vary in their conversion rates from mention to recommendation. In this case, Gemini names it most often at 86% and recommends it in 28%, while Perplexity recommends it most at 29% on 79% mentions.
Answers are unusually similar across personas.
Models were asked through buyer lenses. How often Workday is the primary recommendation for each.
4 points separate CHRO and IT lead from CFO.
CFO, CHRO and IT lead all hear Workday about one time in four. What changes is who else is named: for the person running payroll and day-to-day HR, ADP, UKG and Dayforce fill the shortlist ahead of it.
Seven brand elements and how AI understands them.
How strongly each belief is attached to the brand for the models. Strong means the models state it without being asked. Partial means it shows up with a hedge. Thin means it is rarely attached at all.
Nothing is strong. The one belief the models carry is the ERP story: one system for HR and finance. The AI story is absent. Agents are missing from 94% of answers, the skills story from 89%, and responsible AI appears in 1% of answers.
Recommended, not just described.
Multiple asks of the same query battery across each model produce different contextual outcomes. Context matters when measuring how AI is shaping customer perceptions and actions beyond these AI conversations.
“My blunt recommendation Choose Workday if: You want the best strategic enterprise HR platform and can support the investment.”
ChatGPT · Named
“If you need to provision a laptop, deploy app permissions, and run global payroll simultaneously through automated workflows, Rippling does it faster than legacy giants.”
Where the recommendation goes instead · Google AI Mode names Rippling
“If your company is more globally standardized and process-heavy, SAP SuccessFactors is a strong alternative, especially when you want enterprise HR, talent management, and broad international consistency from a cloud-based suite.”
And again, on another model · Perplexity names SAP SuccessFactors
Who else in the competitive set is on the shortlist.
How often each other brand is named anywhere in the answers.
Oracle is named in more than half the answers. The mid-market names, UKG, Dayforce, ADP and Rippling, are the ones that take the recommendation when the question comes from HR operations.
